Who we are
The Research Center for Systems and Technologies (SYSTEC) is part of the Associated Laboratory ARISE – Advanced Production and Intelligent Systems – with FEUP (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto) and ISR (Institute for Systems and Robotics) as its main hosts. With more than 100 researchers and 40 integrated members, and having created over 10 spin-offs in the past decade, SYSTEC is one of Portugal's leading research and development institutions.
SYSTEC pursues an ambitious R&D and innovation agenda aimed at advancing knowledge and its impact across systems and technologies. Its research spans three main areas: control and networked dynamical systems; industrial informatics and cyber-physical systems; and energy systems and smart cities. This work is guided by a strategy built around five priorities: (i) fostering academic excellence; (ii) building worldwide collaborations with institutions and researchers whose scientific interests align with its own, ensuring the critical mass needed for high-impact work; (iii) engaging closely with end-users and stakeholders to keep its research attuned to challenge-driven innovation; (iv) nurturing the emergence of actors capable of shaping new paradigms for the societal impact of science and technology; and (v) integrating its work with advanced training and education activities.
In particular, SYSTEC research unit sets forth the following key goals:
Undertake fundamental and applied research and development in i) systems, control, optimization, estimation, robotics, and their articulation in cyber-physical architectures for networked vehicles and systems, ii) power management, with an emphasis in the network integration of renewables and electric mobility and iii) advanced production systems, anchored essentially in the core scientific areas of electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computation sciences (including “data science”).
Contribute to the valorization and transfer of the generated knowledge and products to society.

To efficiently achieve its goals, SYSTEC is organized in three Intervention Vectors:

Foundational research and theory development in Systems Analysis, Control Theory, Optimization, Networked Control Systems, Machine Learning and Autonomous Robotic Systems.

integrating Industrial Informatics, model-based software engineering, Internet of Things and edge computing, Cyber-Physical Systems, Digital High-Performance Simulation, autonomic computing, and Digital-Twin technologies for Advanced Production Systems.

Cutting-edge areas associated to the sustainable development through a multi-systems perspective, encompassing research on Smart Grid and Energy Systems, Electric Mobility and Intelligent Transportation Systems, Urban Safety and Resilience, Sensor Networks, and Sustainable Resources Management.
This structure is designed to promote the progress towards a unifying long term vision in which theoretical developments will evolve in such a way as to match the complex requirements of the emerging challenges inherent to the complexity of the real-world systems, notably, the various classes of complex, large scale, networked systems.

SYSTEC is proudly hosted by the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP) and the Institute for Systems and Robotics - Porto (ISR-Porto).
Collaborations
SYSTEC is part of the the Advanced Production and Intelligent Systems (ARISE) Associated Laboratory (AL).
ARISE-LA is an association of five R&D Units established in 2021, interfacing public entities of:
3 Universities – Coimbra, Minho and Porto, through the R&D Units CEMMPRE, ISR-Coimbea, ISISE and SYSTEC, and;
1 Higher Education institution – Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, through CDRSP.
